Today is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

In 2020 the COVID-19 pandemic caused extreme poverty to rise for the first time in decades, and now, the number of people living in extreme poverty – that is, on less than $1.90 per day – is still not declining. 

An estimated 7% of the global population (around 575 million people) could find themselves trapped in these conditions by 2030, according to figures from the United Nations.

Meanwhile, inequalities between the rich and poor have widened, with the fortunes of the five richest men in the world increasing from $405 billion to $869 billion between 2020 and 2023 (per the NGO Oxfam).
